Some women insist that maternity clothing is a waste of time.  I’m puzzled by this perspective.  While yes, some non-knocked up wear fits all through your pregnancy, there comes a time when something’s gotta give.

And for me, it’s the waistband.

This is my second pregnancy, and I thought I’d be pretty much set for maternity wear.  But as I end my 15th week, I’m confronting an interesting problem:  chiefly, I’m about 30 pounds lighter than I was the first time the HPT read “pregnant.”  So even though I was eight weeks more pregnant last springtime, my maternity capris and tees are undeniably way too big.

And so I sprung for a $30 pair of convertible pants/capris at Old Navy.  They’re versatile, they’re plain, they’re inoffensive.

They have a drawstring waistband.

I’ll admit that I can’t wait to wear them.  I’m at that point in pregnancy where casual acquaintances are starting to look closely when I turn sideways.  As I head towards 16 weeks, I’m looking forward to that “cute pregnant woman” phase.  This, of course, quickly transitions to the “beached whale” phase, so I’m determined to enjoy it while it lasts.

But there’s still part of me undeniably troubled by weight gain and my expanding waistline.  It’s undeniably vain of me, but there it is.  I’m excited, I’m nervous.

I’m snipping off the price tags and sliding my legs in.  And that waistband?  For now, I’m cinching it.
